NBA legend, Michael Jordan recently opened his second medical clinic, established to serve underprivileged communities in Charlotte.
On Monday, October 19, one year after opening the first Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Medical, the second facility opened all thanks to a $7 million grant.
“It gives my family great pride to know that we are making a difference in Charlotte,” Jordan told the Charlotte Observer.
Novant Health announced the opening of its second clinic with a video posted on their social media accounts.
“In a year of uncertainty, our missions to improve the health of our communities remain steady,” writes Novant Health in a tweet. “We’ve tested over 13,500 people for #COVID19 at the Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinic and we’re proud to announce the opening of the second clinic in north Charlotte.”
“A year ago we [were] standing there opening up this clinic, I was so emotional about how it meant to my family,” says Jordan in the video released by Novant Health. He continued, “and to see how this has evolved over this last year, is so gratifying. It makes me want to continuously do more so that we can keep answering the bell when the bell is ringing.”
In April only a few months after its opening, the first clinic located on Freedom drive transitioned into a respiratory assessment center to aid communities in need for COVID-19 testing, screening, and education.
“When we came together to mark the first clinic’s opening last fall, no one could have predicted we would be facing a global pandemic just five months later,” Jordan says in a statement. “I’m so proud of the positive impact our clinic has had on the community so far especially during COVID-19. Our second clinic will provide critical service to improve the health and lives of more Charlotteans, which is so important to me and Novant Health.”
The second clinic located on North End is equipped with a total of 12 patient rooms, a room for X-rays, and additional space for physical therapy. This second clinic will also use the integrated service practiced previously at the Freedom Drive location to help “identify, treat and support social determinants of health.”
“When this clinic opened, I said ‘We’re here for the long haul. Not just in a crisis’, Carl Armato, CEO and president of Novant Health added. “In fact, the first clinic enabled us to better respond to the COVID-19 crisis. It gave us the infrastructure to set up walk-up testing – no referral needed. It gave us a platform to educate and treat patients – close to home. It even gave us a distribution point for our universal masking initiative, where we provided free masks to anyone who needed them. This second location is critical, as it expands our impact and reach.”
