Vice President Kamala Harris will be opening the 10th Annual Women of Power National Summit with remarks at the Black Women’s Roundtable. The multigenerational conference is a four-day event that will be open to the public virtually and will bring more than 700 participants-Black women and teenagers from all over The United States.
The theme for the conference is “Rebuilding Hope, Justice, Equity & Equality,”. According to ESSENCE, the theme aims to leverage collective and individual influence due to the unprecedented health, racial and other situations impacting America. But the conference is not focusing on all the bad, the organizers plan to celebrate women’s history month and the recent election of VP Harris at the conference.
“Our purpose for gathering this year could not be clearer,” said Melanie L. Campbell, president/CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation, and convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable. “As we enter a new chapter in our nation’s history, we have an unprecedented opportunity to shape the health and wealth of our communities.”
Campbell says even though the country is experiencing unprecedented turbulence, the country also has a “glimmers of hope.”
She noted the election of the first black and south asian Vice President of the United States of America and the historical shift in Georgia saying, “We are honored and delighted that Vice President Harris will bring opening remarks. We also know that her very presence will encourage [our] girls to dream even bigger dreams and believe they can be anything they want to be.”
According to ESSENCE, organizers stated “participants will strategize public policy priorities impacting Black women, their families and communities, with a goal of developing empowerment plans for this year and beyond.”
The conference will also release its 2021 Policy Agenda and annual report that will emphasize policy recommendations such as COVID-19, racial justice/hate crimes, criminal justice/policing reform, voting rights, affordable housing, education, environmental justice/climate change, entrepreneurship, paid family leaves, raising the minimum wage and more.
VP Harris is not the only person speaking at the conference. A host of elected officials and leaders, advisors, administrators, and lawmakers will be in attendance to speak also.
