Singer and Songwriter, H.E.R , is using her art to send a powerful message in her latest track I Can’t Breathe. The song comes in the midst of public outcry for the support of Black Lives.
The songs seems to capture the emotions of millions after experiencing the the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police. Many artists and citizens alike have been having deep reactions to this incident and have taken multiple avenues to express their concerns. Public outcry hs been expressed through art, social media, protesting and more. Now more than ever we see activism has been prominent in all over the country.
The track, which will be dropping on Juneteenth, echos the sentiment “Why is there so much hate?” Through her lyrics she questions how humanity can move forward with the tension and lack of sympathy for each other.
“How do we cope when we don’t love each other?”
As one of her favorite lines from the song, she expressed her understanding of the confusion of the people and the lack of answers to major questions and concerns we have with the current state of affairs. But she hopes to encourage positive change and healing for our entire community, starting with loving and understanding each other.
In an interview with TMZ, she expressed how she felt obligated to get her thoughts on the matter out to her fans and the people.
“Every artist has a responsibility to talk about what’s going on right now. Just use your gifts to express the emotion that you feel.“
Many feel artists should use their platform to reflect the current state of affairs in our country and to hopefully inspire change. So far, it seems like H.E.R is well on her way to changing the world; definitely in music anyway.
