Will Smith and self-proclaimed “Fresh Prince Super Fan,” Morgan Cooper have partnered to create a drama reboot of the beloved 90’s sitcom the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

According to Hollywood Reporter the reboot, titled Bel-Air, will “dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions, and biases of what it means to be a black man in America today.”

The reboot is based on a viral trailer produced by Cooper and released in 2019. The four-minute trailer reimagined the once comedic sitcom as “gritty contemporary drama.”

After the trailer went viral, Smith interviewed Cooper on his YouTube channel where he refers to the trailer as “an idea that is brilliant.”

The Hollywood Reporter says sources revealed to them that the remake has been in works for over a year.

The original series producers Smith, Quincy Jones, and Benny Medina along with creators Andy and Susan Borowitz are returning as executive producers for the drama reboot. Cooper will also co-write the series alongside Chris Collins, who will serve as the showrunner and executive producer.

Although the premiere date is unclear. The drama reboot is reportedly being offered to numerous streaming platforms, such as Netflix, HBO Max, and NBC’s Peacock.
