Rising star Aria Brooks is making her mark as an actress starring in the film Harriet. JaGurl TV spoke with Aria during a virtual interview to discuss her casted role in the reboot series All That on Nickelodeon; and her inspiration behind her newest single, “Am I Next?”
“It feels really, really good,” says the singer/writer, “like all the opportunities I’ve gotten, all the people I’ve got to meet. The show itself is like super funny and fun to be a part of. And like to be able to continue that legacy, that is continuing after so many years, is like really crazy and super unbelievable and I’m super grateful and blessed that I got this opportunity. And I love it!”
Too young to have grown up watching the “All That” original series, Brooks combined her ideas and her mother’s knowledge of the show to prepare for the casting call.
“The first audition I had to come up with a couple of sketch characters, three to five” the fourteen-year-old explains. “And then I had to record myself doing the lines that they say…I did all that, and then we sent that in and that was that. Then a couple of days later I got the call back which required me to fly out to California. So the first one was a self-tape and then this one I had to go in person.”
Brooks tweaked her in-person audition slightly in which she performed in front of casting directors and the producers of the series.
A couple of days later, Brooks received the third and final audition, the screen test. A couple of days following her final audition, Brooks’ was told that she got the role.
Brooks’ creative drive has led her to different forms of art outside the realm of acting. Currently, the young star uses music as a form of therapy to illustrate her feelings towards things affecting her.
On November 6, 2020 Brooks released a song titled, “Am I Next?” referring to the fear as a young black woman engaging with the police.
