Model, tv personality and author Chrissy Teigen announced via Twitter that she is donating $200,000 to help bail out protesters across the country, who were arrested during demonstrations in honor of George Floyd; an African-American man who was killed by a white cop last week.
Teigen initially planned to donate $100,000 but according to CNN after a Twitter user called the protesters “rioters and criminals”– she decided to raise the stakes a little higher writing, “Ooo they might need more money then. Make it $200,000,”
This announcement is in response to President Trump declaring on Twitter that Saturday was “MAGA Night at the White House.” CNN reports, the tweet came after protesters gathered at the nation’s capital to speak out against racism and police brutality following Floyd’s death.
Many people worried that “MAGA Night” would increase the racial violence given its history. But President Trump tried to reassure the nation by saying at a press conference that “MAGA means Make America Great Again and by the way they love African-American people.”
Aside from Teigen other celebrities like Seth Rogen, Steve Carrell, Don Cheadle, and Janelle Monáe have donated funds to help bail out protesters.
