Orange Is the New Black star Danielle Brooks is set to play legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in upcoming film, Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia.
The first trailer was released on Martin Luther King day, to honor the role Jackson played in the civil rights leader’s famous speech, “I Have A Dream.”
The film will follow Jackson’s life as well as the intricate role she played as part of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s close circle.
“A lot of people don’t know that there would not be the famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech without Mahalia Jackson.” Brooks explains “She shouted out, ‘Tell them about the dream!’ Mahalia Jackson was the voice for the people. Her music moved people. It did something. It changed people’s hearts. We have to, have to remember Mahalia Jackson.”
The film was produced by Roberts and directed by Tony-Award winner Kenny Leon.
The film will premiere on Lifetime, Saturday, February 3rd.
