Today Facebook announced a change to its policy regarding paid political ads, specifically those that discourage people from voting. Previously, these kinds of ads were allowed, but today Facebook CEO Mark Zucherberg announced that these ads will be banned from the site.
As campaign year 2020 grows near it is expected that political campaign ads will increase on social media platforms. In the past, Facebook has allowed the promotion of political views as long as it did not promote violence. Facebook has taken recent action, removing 4 ad campaigns linked to Iran and Russia that promoted disinformation and will begin to utilize fact checkers for content posted to the site in the future.
