It isn’t a dream this time! Emmy-Award nominee, Issa Rae, is the first person to receive Inglewood’s Key to the City after 114 years of incorporation.

At the end of the fifth season of Insecure, we see Issa in a dreamscape wondering which path she would take in life. Viewers watched as Mayor Tyra Banks bestowed the key to character, Issa Dee. On Saturday during the Taste of Inglewood festival, Issa Rae was presented by Mayor James T. Butts making the dream into reality. “I’m a little emotional, I’m trying to be a thug right now. The mayor really flabbergasted me in that this is the first key in 114 years. It’s a huge honor and I just want to thank you all so much for your support. Thank you to the mayor, thank you to the city of Inglewood for making it so easy for us to film here, for helping us to showcase this city that I love so much.” Rae stated.

As a native of Inglewood, Issa Rae never fails to show love to the city that made her who she is. “I will always put on for my city. Inglewood, South L.A., stand up.” It is a primary setting in a lot of her works including The Sweet Life: Los Angeles and The Photograph. The actress also shows continuous love to Black-owned businesses within her community. As an actress, director, creator, Issa Rae never forgets where she came from and makes sure to put Inglewood on the map.
