We know Jason Lee as the outspoken personality who brings the news to the streets. Jason Lee built the foundation of his career reporting on the lives of other celebrities. His breaking stories have often left us shocked and sometimes caused friction in Hollywood. In 2015, he became the founder, editor-in-chief and CEO of the gossip blog Hollywood Unlocked. We have seen him on many shows like Love and Hip Hop, Wild ‘N’ Out, Hollywood Unlocked podcast, and different daytime television shows to share his opinion about pressing topics within his world. Now we can add author to the list as Lee just released his book God Must Have Forgotten About Me.
JaGurl TV caught up with Lee at Floyd Mayweathers 43rd birthday celebration in Hollywood. There we talked about the process to publicize the book and how long it took before it hit the shelves.
“First of all I had to find a really good publisher who could work with me and find my voice, which I did. I just started writing the book, which took me about 9 months and then the editing process of making sure all the stories flowed together. Now, I’ve put it out and been on a book tour.”
Lee then continued by expressing what he would like to do next in his career after so much success with his book. “I’ve just been meeting with people to see how I can expand my team because now we are trying to go global. You know people do not realize that 20% of Instagram and the people that use Instagram are in the United States. The other 80% are all over the world, and we focus too much on whats happening here instead of whats happening in the international markets. Theres money over there and there’s people, so thats what my focus is on for the next year.”
We cannot forget about the foundation that made Jason Lee a household name. Being a part of Hollywood Unlocked for 5 years, Jason has managed to see the team grow and transform into what it is today. “I have the most amazing team ever. Everyone started out as an intern and now they are either full time or they’re working permanently with the company. They put in the hard work and the dedication.” He continued, “I think in this new generation, especially with social media, people are looking for really quick gratification and really quick results but really the things that last and stick and that shows you the benefits of your hard work is the stuff you put a lot of investment to. I am grateful, the Hollywood unlocked team is amazing, and those are my people.”
Lee is now looking to take his business globally. The market is so big oversees and it would be unfair to keep this shining personality all to ourselves. To get there it takes a lot of networking to get to the right people. “Well if you don’t know how to network then you just won’t be successful. Networking is not just knowing the owners of the venue. Its knowing the security guards at the door, its knowing the promoters who promote the venue… everybody has value and for me I try to get as many numbers as I can.”
