Kamala Harris broke barriers in American Politics, previously dominated by white men, by becoming the nation’s first female Black and South Asian Vice President.

The former California Senator was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, using two bibles. One that belonged to the first African American to serve on the Supreme Court, Thurgood Marshall. And the other, a sentimental family heirloom that belonged to Regina Shelton, the woman who helped raise Harris and her sister, Maya.

Joined by her husband, who will assume the title of Second Gentleman, Doug Emhoff. Harris was escorted to the U.S. Capital steps by Eugene Goodman, the heroic Captial Police officer who diverted the mob during the siege of the building on Jan. 6th.

Wednesday morning, Harris took to Twitter to honored her mother in a tribute video.

“I am here today because of the women who came before me,” Harris captions the post.

Shortly following the ceremony, the new VP took to Twitter to announce that she is ready to assume her role.
