2022 BET Hip Hop Awards Recap with Big Wins and Special Appearances

The 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards brought together leaders in the industry for another annual award celebration which aired Tuesday, October 4th. Grammy-nominated artist Fat Joe hosted the star-studded night at The Cobb Energy Center in Atlanta featuring big wins from trailblazers in the industry.

The highly anticipated award show opened with an “OG Atlanta vs. New Atlanta” HBCU-style marching band with Fat Joe and a performance by the “Billie Eilish” artist Armani White. Rising artist GloRilla made her first television debut performing her hot single “FNF” and “Tomorrow” featuring EST Gee. Some artists made surprise appearances including Jeezy, Kodak Black, and Clipse. Other artists like Bleu, French Montana, and N.O.R.E performed their latest singles. Joey Bada$$ honored the late Young Dolph by performing “Head High” in an “In Memorium” tribute.

The night continued with the awarding of hip hop’s most notable artists. Kendrick Lamar lead with six wins with the ‘Artist of the Year’, ‘Best Lyricist’, and ‘Best Live Performer’. His collaboration with Baby Keem for “Family Ties” won them the ‘Best Hip Hop Video’ and ‘Video Director of the Year’ with Dave Ease. His most recent album “Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers” won the ‘Album of the Year’ award. Drake took home 3 wins including ‘Besy Collaboration” for ‘Wait for You’ featuring Tems and Future. He also won ‘Sweet 16: Best Featured Verse” for ‘Wait for You’ and ‘Churchill Downs’ with Jack Harlow.

For her single “Big Energy”, Latto won ‘Song of the Year’. Lizzo won the ‘Impact Track’ award for “About Damn Time”. GloRilla took her place as ‘Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist’. “Caresha Please” tied with “Drink Champs” for the ‘Best Hip Hop’ platform award. More winners for the night include Hitmaka, DJ Drama, EARTHGANG, and 50 Cent.

This year’s rising stars like Baby Tate, Guapdad 4000, and Sauce Walka participated in cyphers on stage with Armani Ceasar and OT The Real participating digitally following. TI, Trick Daddy, Tyrese, the cast of “IMPACT ATL” and more graced the stage for special appearances. Find the complete list of winners here.
