FIND OUT WHO THE SCHOOL IS FOR INSIDE
240 students started school today at the I Promise School in Akron, Ohio. Lebron James, NBA superstar and community leader created the school as an extension of his non-profit organization, the LeBron James Family Foundation. The school’s purpose serves to give at-risk children an escape from turmoil and overcome daily obstacles they face, which intern will align them with opportunities for success that they might not have come across otherwise.
The school will focus on accelerated learning to help students who are behind reach higher educational levels. Another imperative addition to the school’s core , highlights combating factors outside of the classroom that could cause children to struggle. Services will be provided to help students deal with stress from home along with providing opportunities for parents such as job placement and an onsite food bank. Activities to prevent the kids from having too much idle time and potentially getting into trouble is also on the list for things that make this school different and ideal for at-risk children.
In 2011, The LeBron James Family Foundation began to examine the high school dropout rate in Akron and launched the I PROMISE Initiative, in hopes to change vicious generational curses by helping the youth in his hometown. James also has funded the “Wheels for Education” program, which started in 2011 and provides kids with school supplies, access to computers, and a bicycle inside a system designed to keep kids motivated to complete their homework and get good grades.
James long term commitments to the youth and his community are an inspiration to JaGurl TV and hopefully to you to you. Let us know what you think in the comments!
