Mary J. Blige Transforms her 90’s Anthem Into A Feature Film

Mary J. Blige is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is often referred to as the queen of hip hop soul and rightfully earned as she has amassed numerous awards in this scope. She has won and been nominated for awards from the Grammys, American Music, Billboard, Golden Globe, and the Academy Awards shows. In 2022, as if foretold, she is collaborating with Lifetime to produce a network premiere of a movie based on one of her hit songs, Real Love.

Real Love, the film in homage to the song’s namesake, will be a coming-of-age romantic drama portraying the life of Kendra as she heads out to start her life in college. The project is set to follow her along with her studies in film class, where she reluctantly falls for her class project partner, Ben. In this endeavor she tries her best to maintain her focus on school. The feeling is mutual as they are head over heels for each other and find their perspective Real Love in each other. 

As the film is to be executive produced by Blige, it will also incorporate additional hits by her throughout the movie. This musical decision is on-brand with her Blue Butterfly production company and their goal of, bringing more stories to life with music as the foundation. “I wrote Real Love based on my real-life experiences and my fans connected to it in a deeply personal way,” Blige shares in a statement about her 90’s chart-topping classic. “It’s exciting to now use this song and my music to create a new story by way of film, continuing to build on a pillar of the foundation of my production company, Blue Butterfly. My passions for acting and music include developing diverse stories with music as the backdrop. I am grateful to Lifetime for their partnership in the story of Real Love. “
