NBA Hall of Framer Michael Jordan is donating $10 million to help open two new health clinics in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina.
The funds will be going to Novant Health, a four-state wide network of clinics, centers, and hospitals. Previously, Jordan has donated to Novant Health in order to created more clinics in North Carolines. His new donation will help fund two new healthcare clinics slated to open in 2022.
“I am very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown,” Jordan says in a press release. “Everyone should have access to quality health care, no matter where they live, or whether or not they have insurance. Wilmington holds a special place in my heart and it’s truly gratifying to be able to give back to the community that supported me throughout my life.”
Back in 2017, Jordan donated $7 million to Novant Health to open two health clinics in Charlotte, NC. Accompanying his large donation was a pledge to help provide healthcare and resources to underserved communities.
The first Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinic opened October 2019. Since its opening, the clinic has provided more than 13,000 COVID tests and screenings.
Last October, the NBA Legend opened up his second medical clinic in Charlotte.
Since its opening, Novant Health explains that Jordan’s two Charlotte clinics have brought resources to underserved communities. These resources include primary care, behavioral health, and social support services. The clinics’ have seen over 4,500 patients and administered almost 1,000 COVID vaccines.
“This pandemic has exacerbated health equity gaps across our state, making our efforts to close them even more emergent. We look forward to standing these clinics up as quickly as possible to ensure all members of the community have access to necessary medical care” said Carl Armato, president and CEO of Novant Health. “We are so appreciative of Michael’s unwavering commitment to help us bring affordable care to our communities that need it most. It’s not only an investment in us as a partner, but it’s an investment in each and every person that our clinics can reach.”
Novant Health has stated it has now received a total of $17 million from Jordan to help open clinics.
