Following her critically acclaimed directorial debut, Regina King will direct a film adaptation of the Harlem Renaissance-inspired comic series, “Bitter Root.”
Bitter Root was created by David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, and Chuck Brown. Bitter Root follows the story of the Sangeryes family during the Harlem Renaissance. The Sangeryes family are descendants of great monster hunters. The family has to defeat an unprecedented evil as it descends on New York City.
The comic series was created for Legendary Entertainment. The same company in charge of the recent box office hit Godzilla vs. Kong.
“For generations, the Sangeryes have hunted and cured those infected by a supernatural force that feeds off of prejudice and transforms humans into monsters,” Legendary announced. “But with most of the family gone, the remaining Sangeryes disagree over saving or killing the monsters.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, in 2019, the comic received an Eisner and Bingo nomination for best new series.
King will produce the project along with her sister Reina King under their Royal Ties banner. Black Panther‘s Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian will join the duo in producing the film.
