The mother of the late Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton, is now fully qualified to run for Miami Dade County Commissioner District 1.

In 2012, her son was shot and killed walking home from a 7-Eleven in Sanford, Florida. Since then, Fulton has been a strong advocate for gun control reforms.

In honor of her son, Fulton has launched The Trayvon Martin Foundation and the Circle Of Mothers; organizations created to seek to help uplift mothers and other women who lost family members to gun violence.

“At first I didn’t want to be the voice for Trayvon after he died,” Fulton said. “But, I decided I have no choice. Now I am called to act and called to serve. I did not drop to my knees for too long, because I refused to be depressed. I stood up. When my son got shot down, I stood up. And I’m still standing.”

Fulton shared a picture of herself on Twitter with the tweet “I’m officially qualified to run for Miami Dade County Commissioner District 1 #ItsTimeForChange #YourVoteYourVoice #ItsanewdayinMiamiDadeCounty #PositiveVibesOnly http://SybrinaFulton.com

Fulton plans to fight crime in her district, tackle issues about the elderly and mental illness. Her campaign site states she is, “an active member of the community who has dedicated her adult life to public service, empowering women, and fighting for positive social change.” Her main concerns will be transportation, economic opportunity, and housing affordability.

Congratulations Ms. Fulton!
