The latest adaptation of The Color Purple will be a cinematic musical. This serves as an homage to the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical adaptation, which is an adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. The exceptional choice to cast Taraji as Shug was decided after her telecast performance of Annie Live in December of last year. She played the role of Miss Agatha Hannigan in the telecast. Her innate ability to carry a tune and her natural stage presence, Taraji was chosen as the best candidate befitting the character Shug Avery. Moreover, the character herself is a beautiful and dazzling blues singer of the South. Shug is said to be a sexy and glamorous who is dynamic figure in the adventures she is involved in during the story.
Deadline also states we can expect to see Henson star alongside musician H.E.R. and actor Corey Hawkins. The theatrical release for the film is set for December 20, 2023.
